Guest cheat sheet 😄

We’re grateful you're considering joining for an episode of the podcast! We hope to make it as easy and enjoyable an experience as possible.

What is Postgres FM?

It’s a weekly podcast that we release in both video and audio formats.

We typically discuss one topic per episode. We’ve had popular episodes on beginner friendly subjects, but we, and our audience, welcome deep dives into more advanced things too.

We try to keep it conversational, but often start off more interviewy to get things going.

Before recording

We’ll discuss and agree on a topic in advance of recording. We may propose some rough structure and questions to make things easy, but we highly encourage your input on what you think would make the best conversation/episode!

Once we have a rough idea of what we’ll cover, we may need to do some further research on the topic. If you have recommendations on things to read or watch, they’d be most welcome.

Technical tips

  1. Find a quiet room if possible — background noise is tricky to remove, although we can get rid of some. Wear headphones and use a dedicated microphone for bonus points!
  2. Use a chromium browser — the recording software we use (Riverside) works best with Google Chrome, so please use it (or something similar) if possible.
  3. Use a fast (ideally wired) internet connection — the software we use uploads while we record, to reduce the risk of losing files, so it can strain slower connections.
  4. Turn off notifications if you can — this even catches us out from time to time, so feel free to remind us if we don’t mention it before starting the recording!

Afterwards

We generally record on a Tuesday (at 9:30am Pacific Time) and publish on the Friday of that week. Guest bookings can be like London buses, so we may not always be able to release the following Friday, but we usually can.

We edit the episodes, mostly to tighten up gaps, filler words, and cross-talk, but that means we can also remove things after the fact if you regret saying something or decide it’d be best. If so, please do ask as soon as possible after we record.

Unless you request otherwise, we’ll mention you in the Twitter and Mastodon posts announcing the episode! Any help sharing it would be much appreciated, but is not expected.

We are looking to continually improve. If there is something we could have done better, we’d be very grateful for the feedback.

Booking

If that all sounds good and you’re ready to get something in the diary, please feel free to use our SavvyCal link to book a week. If the times there don’t work for you, please do let us know some better times for you. With Nikolay on Pacific time and Michael on UK time, we should be able to make something work, even if we can’t both join!
